Microsoft thinks about buying Yahoo
Baseline reports that Microsoft is considering a bid to buy Yahoo (read article) to try and compete against Google. In some ways such consolidation would be good - fewer instant messaging clients, mapping sites, logins, email systems and search sites is a good thing in my opinion, however having such big players in the industry does make it harder for new companies to find a place in the market.
I wonder whether a link up of the two would really compete with Google anyway. Google’s strengths are new technology, getting to market quickly , responding to customer demand and usability. Google wise I use Google Reader, Google Maps and Google Analytics regularly and occasionally things such as You Tube and Google Calendar. Yahoo wise I use Plaxo (an online address book owned by Yahoo), Yahoo Groups sometimes and Yahoo Pipes. Microsoft wise I only really use Local Live (and that’s only because the detail level is better than on Google Maps). I wonder what a combined Micro-Hoo or Yah-soft could offer that would compete with these. It will be interesting to see what happens.
